Archaeological city of Utica

Utica is located north of Tunis. It is far from the main coastal tourist areas (such as Hammamet or Sousse) and is more accessible from the capital, Tunis. It is usually visited as a half-day excursion combined with other nearby sites.

The archaeological site of Utica (Utique) is one of the most fascinating historical destinations in Tunisia, offering a unique perspective on the Punic and Roman past of North Africa. Utica is considered one of the first Phoenician settlements established on African soil, with evidence suggesting its founding around 1100 BC. Utica is notably older than Carthage. During its early centuries, it played the role of the region's main political and commercial center before being eclipsed and ultimately subordinated by the rapid rise of its neighbor, Carthage.

The archaeological site of Utica covers a modest area compared to other Roman sites and is located about 12 km from the current coastline. The change in the coastline over the centuries explains why what was once a port city is now inland.

The remains on the surface reflect the splendor of the Roman city, highlighting:

• Houses: The superb "House of the Cascade" (Casa de la Cascada), famous for its mosaics and fountains.

• Public Spaces: Remains of the Forum, Temples, and the Thermae (public baths) complex.

• Entertainment: Vestiges of theaters, circuses, and amphitheatres, essential in every large Roman city.

Underground Level (Punic Period). Less visible, but perhaps of greater historical value, is the underground level which has revealed The Punic Necropolis. This is an important burial area that provides crucial information about the customs, rites, and life of the city's first Phoenician and Punic inhabitants, predating Roman rule.
