Located in central Tunisia, in the heart of the high plateaus and surrounded by steppe landscapes that announce the proximity of the desert, this city lies about 117 km southwest of Kairouan and approximately 275 km southwest of the capital, Tunis. A remote place that is home to one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the country.
The area gained great historical importance thanks to the ruins of one of the best-preserved Roman cities in Tunisia, known in Antiquity as Sufetula. This prosperous Roman city later became an important Byzantine capital, leaving behind an exceptional architectural legacy that can still be admired today.
Among its most outstanding monuments are the temples of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, a unique ensemble in the Roman world, as they were built separately instead of on a single shared platform, as was customary. This unusual feature makes Sufetula a truly singular archaeological site.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Byzantines reused the solid Roman foundations to build their own structures. As a result, significant Christian remains can be seen on the site today, including a beautifully preserved baptistery, a testament to the city’s important religious role at that time.
This visit is especially recommended during southern Tunisia circuits, as a cultural highlight on the way to Tozeur. It is a place that impresses thanks to its excellent state of preservation, its rich history and the unique feeling of travelling back in time in the middle of a breathtaking natural setting.
