A city with a strong industrial tradition, with a population of over 100,000 inhabitants. It once belonged to ancient Carthage, was later known as Tacape during Roman times, and eventually became Gabes.
Gabes has experienced several wars throughout its history, from the Punic Wars to the Second World War. Its economy is mainly based on industry, especially the petrochemical sector. The Jara spice market is one of its most famous landmarks. Gabes is the largest coastal oasis thanks to its wells.
It is known as the “Gateway to the South”, as it is a transit point towards the island of Djerba or Matmata. It is not usually chosen for extended stays, as the city—apart from its large palm grove—does not offer significant tourist attractions.
