City of Mahdia
Mahdia (مهدية) occupies a truly strategic geographical position, a privileged setting that explains its great historical importance. For centuries, it was a key point of control in the Mediterranean and even became a pirate stronghold, giving it an intense maritime and defensive character. The town is located on a rocky peninsula, connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, which further enhances its unique character.
Today, Mahdia is a popular tourist destination that has managed to preserve its authenticity while maintaining its role as an important fishing port, where boats return each morning with fresh fish for the local markets. Among its main attractions are the Skifa Kahla, the monumental gateway to the old town; the Carpet Museum, which showcases one of Tunisia’s most prestigious craft traditions; the Great Mosque, sober and elegant; and the impressive Borj el Kebir fortress, offering magnificent views over the sea. Mahdia is also famous for its seafront cemetery, considered one of the most striking in the country.
Mahdia offers good-quality hotels, ideal for travellers seeking tranquillity, less crowded beaches and an authentic atmosphere. However, it should be borne in mind that the area is somewhat remote if one plans to take frequent excursions to other parts of the country, making it particularly suitable for relaxing stays.
