George Lucas, Anthony Minghella, and Jean-Jacques Annaud were captivated by this stunning desert landscape, located just a few kilometres from Tozeur. The desert Hollywood exists… and it’s in Tunisia.
Without a doubt, this unforgettable place rose to fame when George Lucas chose it as a natural setting for the legendary Star Wars saga. Later on, the director of The English Patient, Anthony Minghella, was also captivated by the magical light and the colour of the land. But beyond the world of cinema, Oung El Jmel, located just a few kilometres from Tozeur and Nefta, possesses a beauty so powerful that it is well worth visiting for its own sake. A landscape that feels like another planet, where the desert becomes pure emotion.
Fine sand, a mound of stones that resembles the head of a dromedary (Oung el Jmel), and, alongside the aridity, the miracle of Lake Chott el Gharsa, which once had water.
Ups and downs through a magical landscape of dunes and sunlit desert tracks lead to one of the most cinematic places in the Tunisian Sahara. In the middle of nowhere rises Mos Espa, the mythical city built for the filming of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Walking among its sets feels like suddenly stepping into another galaxy.
This unique setting was also chosen by Anthony Minghella for some of the most memorable scenes of The English Patient, placing the main characters’ camp here in the vastness of the desert.
Antonio Banderas, Spain’s most internationally renowned actor, lived in this area for several months during the filming of Oro Negro.
More recently, the desert once again became a film set with the shooting of The Expendables, starring Sylvester Stallone.
To fully experience this adventure, it is essential to visit the site in a 4x4 vehicle if you reach it via the desert tracks. The journey itself is part of the experience, making the route as unforgettable as the destination.
