Tataouine, the Tatooine from Star Wars

The Governorate of Tataouine is located in the far south of Tunisia, along the border with Libya. Its capital and main city is Tataouine, and it is the largest governorate in the country, covering an area of 38,889 km², while also being one of the least populated. This low population density has helped preserve a wild, authentic environment rich in history.

The region is deeply shaped by Berber culture, reflected in its traditional architecture, mountain villages and ancestral way of life. One of its most iconic features are the ksar (plural ksour), a word meaning “palace”, which actually refers to ancient fortified granaries carved into the rock, used for centuries to store crops and protect local communities from invasions. Among the most famous are Ksar Hadada, Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Ghilane.

Tataouine is also internationally famous for its connection to the Star Wars saga. The name of the planet Tatooine was inspired by this very region, and just a few kilometres away, visitors can still explore original film sets, particularly at Ksar Hadada, where scenes from The Phantom Menace were filmed. This has made the area a must-visit destination for film lovers.

Another remarkable site is Chenini, an ancient Berber village built into the mountainside, where troglodyte dwellings, stone alleyways and a small white mosque still dominate the landscape. It is a place filled with history, silence and breathtaking views over southern Tunisia.

For those interested in natural history, the Museum of the Memory of the Earth is also well worth a visit. It showcases dinosaur remains dating back more than 90 million years, from a time when this region was once covered by the sea.
