Sousse

The city of Susa (French, Sousse, Arabic, سوسة Susa) is located on the east coast of Tunisia, 140 km south of the capital. Founded probably before Carthage, is called "The Pearl of the Sahel".

This is the first resort of Tunisia.

Places of interest

Without doubt, the most important is the Medina, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988 for its excellent state of preservation. Within its walls are:

  • The Ribat, with a high tower and seven bastions. VIII century fortress designed to house a community of ascetics Muslims responsible for monitoring the coast.
  • The Great Mosque, in the year 850. Its walls are giving you the appearance of a fortress. It is one of the oldest examples of Muslim art in the Maghreb.
  • The Kasbah citadel overlooking the medina from the top of a hill. From 30 meters high, visitors can admire the whole city.
  • The local museum has a magnificent collection of mosaics.

Near the city there are several Christian catacombs of ages II to IV, which contain more than 10,000 graves.

Stresses Port el Kantaoui, the first port of the Mediterranean Garden. Built in Arab-Andalusian style, is a homogeneous set of hotels, residences, shops and entertainment. It has a marina with 340 berths and a golf course with 36 holes.
